RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING "BLACK HISTORY MONTH" IN INGHAM COUNTY



RESOLUTION #00-002



WHEREAS, Carter G. Woodson was born to parents who had been slaves and could not read or write; and



WHEREAS, having to work to earn money to support his family, Carter G. Woodson started school later than most children; and



WHEREAS, Carter G. Woodson became a high school teacher, saddened to discover that none of the schools taught the history of black Americans, he started the American Negro Academy to study the important accomplishments of black people; and



WHEREAS, on February 19, 1926, Carter G. Woodson established "Negro History Week" which is now called "Black History Month" in the United States; and



WHEREAS, the month of February is recognized across the United States as "Black History" month to promote a greater awareness of the history and culture of black Americans.



THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby recognizes the month of February as "Black History Month" in Ingham County.
