RESOLUTION DESIGNATING SEPTEMBER 17-23, 2000 AS A YELLOW RIBBON SUICIDE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION WEEK@ IN INGHAM COUNTY

RESOLUTION #00-195

WHEREAS, one of the most disruptive and tragic events a family and community can experience is youth suicide; and

WHEREAS, there are 3 to 6 times more deaths among youth contributed to suicide than as a result of homicide, nationally over 5,000 youth suicides occur annually; and

WHEREAS, the issue of youth suicide and its prevention is extremely important, an immediate need for awareness and prevention must be recognized; and

WHEREAS, statistics have shown that lives are saved by awareness, education and action, community awareness encourages development of strategies to prevent suicide among youth; and

WHEREAS, the Yellow Ribbon is becoming recognized internationally as the symbol for the awareness and prevention of youth suicide.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby designate the week of September 17-23, 2000 as Yellow Ribbon Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Week in Ingham County.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all citizens are encouraged to work to prevent youth suicide and to wear a yellow ribbon to raise awareness and tolerance around all people affected by this tragedy.
