RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING NANCY ERICKSON

RESOLUTION #00-260

WHEREAS, Nancy Erickson began serving as a member of the Board of Education for the Lansing School District in January of 1984; and

WHEREAS, Nancy currently serves as President of the Lansing School Board, a position she has previously held in 1991, 1992 and 1993; she has also served as Treasurer and the Finance Committee Chair in 1989, 1990 and 1998, and as Secretary in 1986 and 1987; and

WHEREAS, throughout her 17 years on the Board, Nancy has been a staunch advocate for students and parental involvement in the schools, a champion of the rights of the disabled, and a leading proponent of the need to expand and improve elementary art, music and physical education programs; and

WHEREAS, she played a key leadership role in the successful millage campaigns of 1984 and 1989 and the $25 million bond issue proposal which district voters approved overwhelmingly in June of 1989; and

WHEREAS, she was instrumental in crafting the needed budget cuts which had to be made in the late 1980's and early 1990's to ensure they would have the least possible impact on the K-12 instructional program, she has helped lead the charge to reallocate the district= s financial and staff resources so they are more focused on classroom instruction; and

WHEREAS, Nancy was the chief architect of the Lansing School District= s strategic plan adopted by the Board in the fall of 1997 which included specific goals to raise student achievement levels and test scores, heighten academic expectations for students, promote greater parent involvement in the schools and improve the public perception of the school system; and

WHEREAS, after 17 years of dedicated service, Nancy Erickson is retiring from her position on the Lansing School District= s Board of Education.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby recognizes Nancy Erickson for her years of dedicated service and contributions to the Lansing School District= s Board of Education and the citizens of Ingham County.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners wishes Nancy Erickson continued success in all of her future endeavors.
