RESOLUTION HONORING CESAR E. CHAVEZ

RESOLUTION #00-061

WHEREAS, March 31, is the birthday of the late Cesar E.Chavez who was born in 1927 among farm workers and spent his adult life educating people about the struggles of farm workers everywhere; and

WHEREAS, Cesar E. Chavez is best remembered for the organization of farm workers into the National Farm Workers Association, which he began with his personal savings, and for the Grape Boycott which he inspired in the 1960's; and

WHEREAS, Cesar E. Chavez was respected by many and loved especially by Hispanics for his dedication to human dignity; and

WHEREAS, Cesar E. Chavez served in the United States Navy during World War II and received the Medal of Freedom; and

WHEREAS, the Cesar E. Chavez Commission will be hosting the fifth annual Commemorative Dinner on March 31, 2000, commemorating the memory of the late leader of the Farm Labor Movement.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby honors the memory of Cesar E. Chavez, an extraordinary American.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners recognizes that Cesar E. Chavez's methods of humanitarian and non-violent means to promote civil and labor justice remain a model for our society.
