RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF THE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF MASON
RESOLUTION #01-115
WHEREAS, the First Presbyterian Church of Mason was organized on January 15, 1859 and consisted of seven members; and
WHEREAS, services were held in the old Courthouse, which was purchased by D. B. Harrington, and moved to South Jefferson Street where it stands today, church services were attended by Baptists and Presbyterians; and
WHEREAS, in 1864 the Presbyterians moved to the Methodist Church where they held alternate services with the Methodists until July 4, 1865, when the church was struck by lightening and burned to the ground, the Presbyterians along with the Methodists returned to the Courthouse to worship; and
WHEREAS, Reverend G. W. Barlow joined the Presbyterians on July 7, 1868, under his leadership a Church was constructed and then dedicated on October 3, 1869; and
WHEREAS, in September of 1899, the decision was made to build a new Presbyterian Church; and
WHEREAS, 1,125 loads of stone were used to build the new church, 500 loads were donated; and
WHEREAS, in April of 1901, the new Presbyterian Church was completed; and
WHEREAS, in honor of the 100th birthday of the church, it will be rededicated on April 15, 2001 by the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Mason.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby honor the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Mason on the event of the 100th birthday of their building and for the contributions they have made to the community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board wishes them continued success for many years to come.
