RESOLUTION HONORING WALT CAMPBELL



RESOLUTION #01-158



WHEREAS, Walt Campbell was born on June 21, 1911 in Manistee, Michigan, and his family then moved to Muskegon where he spent most of his life; and



WHEREAS, Walt has become well-known within Ingham County and the State of Michigan for his dedication and commitment throughout the years to the labor movement and various service organizations; and



WHEREAS, Walt has been active in the labor movement since he joined Local 404 of the Allied Industrial Workers, AFL-CIO in 1937; and



WHEREAS, as an employee of the Norge Division of Borg Warner, he was elected to serve the local union in various capacities, including chief steward, bargaining committeeman and president, and in 1941 he began to work for the international union; and



WHEREAS, in 1943 Walt became an AIW International representative where he served until 1967, when he was elected Regional Director of the AIW Region 7, and a member of the AIW International Executive Board, and prior to this he served as a member of the Michigan AFL-CIO Executive Board and Executive Committee; and



WHEREAS, in 1959, he was appointed by Governor G. Mennen Williams as one of two labor members of the Michigan Employment Security Commission, and was later reappointed by Governors Milliken and Blanchard, and when his term ended in 1987 he had served three times as Chairman of the Commission; and



WHEREAS, Walt Campbell was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Michigan State AFL-CIO in June of 1971, a position he held until his retirement in 1976; and



WHEREAS, Walt devoted his life to organizations throughout the community serving in leadership positions on the Michigan AFL-CIO Community Services Committee, Board of Directors of the United Way of Michigan, Michigan Welfare Reform Coalition, Board of Directors of the Michigan Diabetes Association, United Negro College Fund Labor Committee, Board of Directors of the Michigan Housing Association, Greater Lansing Food Bank, Catholic Social Services of Lansing, Community Affairs Department of Michigan Catholic Conference; and as a trustee of the Joseph H. Albers Trust Fund for Diocesan Vocations; and



WHEREAS, he has served or currently serves on the Board of Directors of Lansing Health Central, Michigan League for Human Services, Board of Directors for the Capital Area United Way, and the Board of the Voluntary Agency Group, and serves as Chairperson of Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Lansing.

WHEREAS, on June 21, 2001, Walt Campbell will celebrate his 90th Birthday.



THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby congratulates Walt Campbell on the event of his 90th Birthday and extends its sincere appreciation to Walt for his commitment and the many contributions he has made to the citizens of Ingham County and the State of Michigan.
