RESOLUTION HONORING RUBEN BURKS

RESOLUTION #98-133

WHEREAS, Ruben Burks has been a member of the UAW for more than four decades; and

WHEREAS, on June 21, 1989, at the Union's 29^th Constitutional Convention, he was elected Director of the UAW Region 1C by the Region's delegates; and

WHEREAS, prior to assuming the position as Director, Ruben served as Assistant Director of Region 1C since his appointment in June of 1983; and

WHEREAS, Ruben first became a member of the UAW Local 598 when he hired into the former Fisher Body Plant 2 of General Motors Corporation in Flint where he held elected positions as a shop committeeperson, alternate committeeperson and Local 598 Executive Board member, in 1970 he was appointed to the International Union staff in Region 1C; and

WHEREAS, as an active member in the community Ruben has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and concern on behalf of Michigan families, in particular, for our children; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Burks was elected in 1991 as the first labor leader to chair the Board of Trustees of United Way of Genesee and Lapeer Counties, he is a former member of the Advisory Board of the University of Michigan at Flint, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Sam Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund, he has also served as a director of Goodwill Industries of Flint, as a member of Area XIII of the Michigan Special Olympics for the mentally retarded, as a director of the Flint Tall Pine Council No. 264 of the Boy Scouts, and in a number of other civic organizations, including the Flint Urban League of which he is a former director; and

WHEREAS, in recognition and appreciation of his contributions to the community, the economy and labor and for speaking for all the people in a voice that is heard, Ruben Burks received an honorary degree in Community Development from Mott Community College in April of 1997.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners extends its highest accolades of commendation to Ruben Burks on his anticipated election as Secretary Treasurer of the UAW International Union.
