RESOLUTION HONORING JOHN T. STATEN



RESOLUTION #98-199



WHEREAS, John T. Staten, Sr. a native of Pulaski, Tennessee, played on Alabama A & M University's football team, as a tackle in the early 1960's, where he was selected all-conference SIAC, as well as player of the week; and



WHEREAS, in 1966 he graduated with a B.S. in Education, received a M.S. from Michigan State University in 1972, and completed training by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the area of narcotics; and



WHEREAS, his professional career included serving as a police officer and detective with the Huntsville Police Department where he gained the fond name of "Big John." He taught at the elementary and secondary school level and served as head coach of Muskegon Heights High School where he gained special recognition by the West Michigan Sports Writers Board as a role model for youth for stressing the importance of winning on the field as well as in the classroom; and



WHEREAS, John T. Staten served as Assistant Director and in various administrative positions in the Michigan Department of Corrections for 22 years, until he retired in 1992; and



WHEREAS, John T. Staten served as Basileus of two local chapters of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Muskegon and Lansing, served on the board of the Food Bank, raised funds for a battered women's shelter, assisted in sponsoring two little league football teams, and also served in the United States Marine Corps; and



WHEREAS, John T. Staten has been selected by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame Committee to be inducted in the 1998 SIAC Hall of Fame, and



WHEREAS, on September 4, 1998 John Staten was inducted into the Alabama A & M University's Football Hall of Fame.



THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby congratulate John T. Staten on the honor of being inducted into the 1998 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame and into the Alabama A & M University's Football Hall of Fame.
