RESOLUTION HONORING ABEL SYKES, JR.

RESOLUTION #99-112

WHEREAS, Abel Sykes, Jr. was appointed President of Lansing Community College on June 1, 1989; and

WHEREAS, as a leader of our community, President Sykes has served as a member of the Board of Directors of various community agencies, as well as participated in and chaired numerous accreditation reviews of educational institutions throughout the country; and

WHEREAS, Abel Sykes, Jr. also serves on the American Council of Education's Commission on Leadership Development and was the past President of the American Association of Community Colleges; and

WHEREAS, in 1986, President Sykes received the Fulbright Award in China, and in 1972 received the "Educator of the Year" award from Phi Delta Kappa,

WHEREAS, President Sykes has created a legacy of excellence during his tenure at the Lansing Community College, helping to make it a place where success begins; and

WHEREAS, Abel Sykes is retiring on June 30, 1999 after 38 years in education, including 10 years of dedicated service as President of Lansing Community College.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby honor President Abel Sykes for his years of dedicated service and commitment as President of Lansing Community College.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board sincerely appreciates the time, commitment and energy he has given to the community and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors.
