RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING "BLACK HISTORY MONTH" IN INGHAM COUNTY



RESOLUTION #99-30



WHEREAS, Carter G. Woodson was born to parents who had been slaves, and could not read or write; and



WHEREAS, Carter Woodson had to work to earn money for the family and started school later than most children; and



WHEREAS, he became a high school teacher and was saddened to discover that none of the schools taught the history of black Americans; and



WHEREAS, Carter G. Woodson started the American Negro Academy to study the important accomplishments of black people, and on February 19, 1926 established "Negro History Week" which is now called "Black History Month" in the United States.



THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby recognizes the month of February as "Black History Month" in Ingham County.
