We are a court of general jurisdiction, hearing civil cases seeking more than $25,000 in damages, all felony criminal matters, and all family matters. Judges of the Family Division have jurisdiction over cases involving juvenile delinquents, abused and neglected children, adoptions, name changes, emancipations, and domestic relation matters.
The District Court handles many traffic violations, civil cases, and probate cases, as well as all misdemeanor cases. We are committed to delivering justice in a professional, efficient, and caring manner.
Domestic disputes are difficult for all parties. It is the children, and the “best interests of the children” that is the major focal point of judicial concern, and the concern of Ingham County Friend of the Court.
We ensure each court within Ingham County has the proper number of qualified prospective jurors, as required by the individual courts.
Our major activities include filing and safekeeping of wills, probating of estates of deceased persons, trust administration, appointment and supervision of guardians and conservators for minors, adults, and developmentally disabled persons and processing mental health matters.
We review all requests for complaints and warrants involving violations of state law, Michigan State University, or County ordinances. Additional duties include the investigation of child paternity, for the establishment of family support.
We defend the liberty and constitutional rights of the individuals whose cases have been entrusted to us. Through zealous advocacy, we strive not only to deliver excellence in our representation of each and every client, but also to stand with our clients and the community in working to create a more just, fair and compassionate legal system.
We help maintain a safe and secure community through our dedication to provide correctional, law enforcement, and related services at the highest possible standards, while respecting the rights of all.
