55th DISTRICT COURT

       The 55th District Court has jurisdiction in Ingham County, Michigan, except the cities of Lansing and East Lansing. The judicial staff includes two District Judges who are elected on nonpartisan ballots for a term of six years.  The judges have appointed a full time attorney/magistrate and two part time attorney/magistrates to assist in judicial duties.  The District Court building is at 700 Buhl Ave., Mason, Michigan. 

        Remote locations for informal traffic hearings are also located at the Meridian Township Public Safety Building, 5151 Marsh Rd., Okemos, MI 48864 (across Central Park Drive from the Meridian Mall) and Lansing Charter Township Hall, 3209 West Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48917. 

         The Administration of the court is divided into four main divisions: Traffic, Civil, Criminal and Probation.

The court staff processes the following:
    1)  criminal and traffic misdemeanors with a one year or less term of imprisonment (jury or non jury trials);
    2)  traffic, state and municipal civil infraction cases;
    3)  felony and misdemeanor arraignments;
    4)  felony preliminary examinations;
    5)  Issue arrest and search warrants upon showing of probable cause;
    6)  Civil jury and non jury trials, when the amount in controversy is $25,000.00 or less,
    7) Civil Small Claims, when the amount in controversy is $3,000.00 or less
    8)  Weddings.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

Accommodations can be made for those with disabilities and in need of assistance.  Items such as assisted listening devices for the hearing impaired are available.   Please contact the court administrator in advance to make arrangements.

FAX FILINGS:  Michigan Court Rule 2.406 was amended January 1, 2004 concerning fax filings with the court.  This court will not accept any pleadings by fax.  Any other documents may be accepted  if specifically approved in advance by the Judge.

The Civil Division of the Court serves a variety of functions.  The Small Claims division provides an informal and reasonably priced way for citizens to resolve matters involving $3,000.00 or less. The parties may not be represented by attorneys and waive all jury and appeal rights.

The Landlord/Tenant division involves summary proceedings to recover land, premises, or a money judgment.

The Civil Division also schedules weddings before the Magistrate or District Judges. Individuals are reminded to bring their marriage license and two witnesses to the Court.   The fee for this service is $10.00.
