Following the events of 9/11, federal, state and local government agencies renewed efforts to prevent and respond to threats of terrorism and other emergencies.  The Ingham County Health Department, through federal funding, increased its capacity to respond to public health emergencies by forming the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program.

The Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program is preparing to respond to any potential public health emergency, natural or man-made, in the county.  The health and safety of the citizens of Ingham County are our primary concerns.  The following information is a brief introduction into the activities of the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program.

Public Health Emergency Response Team

The Public Health Emergency Response Team is responsible for providing preventative health care services and public health preparedness planning.  These activities are conducted through the All Hazard Comprehensive Public Health Emergency Response Plan and the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Program.  Other activities include disease monitoring and risk communication.

The All Hazard Comprehensive Public Health Emergency Response Plan was written to enhance the capacity of Ingham County to respond efficiently and effectively to all types of public health emergencies, ranging from a natural influenza pandemic to an act of terrorism.  A major component of the plan focuses on setting up mass medication distribution clinics in various locations throughout the county.

The Strategic National Stockpile Program is a federal effort to protect communities in the event of any public health emergency.  It is a national reserve of medications and medical supplies that health departments can access and distribute to affected populations in case of public health emergencies where theses assets would be needed.

The Ingham County Health Department’s Disease Control Division monitors health threats in our community routinely.  Through relationships with local hospitals and private healthcare providers, the Health Department maintains a level of awareness that allows us to recognize and respond to potential outbreaks of illnesses.

The goal of risk communication activities in Ingham County is to ensure Ingham County residents have access to information needed to make informed decisions about their health.  Public information and education are the primary tasks of risk communication.  From family and personal preparedness to general information regarding public health issues, education is a tool that enables Ingham County residents to take an active role in preparing for, and responding to possible emergency situations.
