The preceding table listing the causes of death of Ingham County residents shows the relative impact of the various causes of death based on the total number of deaths. With this method, heart disease is clearly the leading cause.
In 1995, heart disease, cancer and stroke were the most frequent causes of death for Ingham County residents. The rates for these causes of death are generally a bit lower for Ingham County than for Michigan as a whole. However, it is important to note that Michigan rates for cardiovascular disease and certain other chronic diseases are among the highest in the United States.
