Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) Training Dates for 2008

Ingham County will be offering two Pork Quality Assurance youth training dates in 2008.  We will be utilizing three instructors in Ingham County this year to deliver PQA education, which will allow us to divide registered youth by age division (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced).  The dates of the trainings are:

Thursday, April 3

Tuesday, May 13

Both trainings will begin at 6:30 p.m. (registration at 6:00 p.m.) and be held at the Mason High School (1001 S Barnes Street, Mason).  The training should take 1-hour to complete; youth in the Intermediate and Advanced divisions should plan 1 ½ hours to complete the training and examination.

Please contact the Ingham County MSU Extension office at (517) 676-7207 or msue33@msu.edu to register for these trainings.  You will need to provide the name(s) and age(s) (as of January 1) for each youth you register.

4-H FACTS

4-H LORE...HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR 4-H FACTS?

The 4-H Pledge

The 4-H Pledge summarizes what 4-H is all about. Four-H has as its goal the four fold development of youth: Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Most 4-H members learn and try to live to the promises they make in the 4-H Pledge.

The Clover

Originally, the symbol of the Boys and Girls Clubs was a three leaf clover with the words Head, Heart and Hands. O.B. Martin, who was directing club work in the South, is credited with suggesting the 4-H’s stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Early in 1911 the present 4-H design was adopted. Today, the 4-H Emblem is protected by a US Code. The white symbolizes purity and the green represents nature's most common color and is emblematic of youth, life and growth.

4-H AGE POLICY IN EFFECT

On September 1, 2004 all of Michigan 4-H youth development programs adopted a uniform age policy.  4-H age is how old you are on January 1 of the current calendar year.  4-H programs are open to all youth aged 5-19 according to "4-H age."  Five to eight year olds are cloverbuds; to participate in competitive events a youth must be 9-19 years old.  Members and adults aged 19 or older are encouraged to join 4-H as leaders and resource volunteers.
