WOODBURNING GUIDELINES
EXHIBITION REQUIREMENTS:
Materials: Basswood or cottonwood (pine is too soft). Graphite (not carbon) paper, tracing paper, woodburner, oil pencils, wood sealer, patterns.
Skills: Work mistakes into the pattern, use fine point, broadside and tip shading.
Finishing: Use two or three coats of finish over the final woodburning (both sides of the wood). If plaque is displayed, it must be ready to hang. Colored pencils may be used.
Size: Do not leave any pencil or graphite lines on the project.
BEGINNING PROJECT IDEAS:
Skills & Project Ideas: SKILLS - learn to trace and transfer patterns. Learn to use fine point and some tip shading. PROJECT - a simple outline with some shading, using mostly fine points, on a simple plaque is best for beginners.
INTERMEDIATE PROJECT IDEAS:
Skills & Project Ideas: SKILLS - learn broad side work and side shading. Experiment with oil pencils. PROJECT - display a larger project with more shading than the previous project.
ADVANCED PROJECT IDEAS:
Skills & Project Ideas: SKILLS - practice a lot of shading using various techniques and shades. Try burning on plexiglass. PROJECT - display something other than a plaque, such as a box, clock, tray, etc.
