As a major partner in the justice system, the Probation Department seeks to increase opportunities through cost effective programming for individuals at risk and offenders to experience success in socially and legally acceptable ways. For those who choose not to make positive changes, we will recommend and impose consequences, thereby holding offenders accountable and protecting public interest and safety.
The Probation Department provides supervision of misdemeanor offenders and monitors individuals placed on probation. In addition, the Probation Department operates a Community Service Program placing offenders to work with non-profit organizations in our community.

MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the 55th District Court SOBRIETY Court is to enhance public safety by requiring personal accountability of alcohol and drug dependent offenders. This mission is accomplished by providing holistic treatment services with intensive judicial supervision. The approach is community based and team driven. The program supports participants in becoming law-abiding, productive, alcohol and drug free citizens.
ENTRY CRITERIA: Participants will be screened at the time of arraignment. This program is specifically targeting OUIL 2nd / OWI 2nd / IMPAIRED 2nd offenders, however, those with significant alcohol and/or other drug dependence could be included in this program if space is available. Offenders who are before the court for an OWI 2nd charge, who do not have a prior conviction for a violent crime (as established by federal guidelines), reside within 30 miles of Ingham County and do not have other warrants/holds for their arrest, will immediately meet with the Sobriety Court Probation Officer for an alcohol/drug screening. If that assessment shows a significant alcohol problem, they will be given a bond condition to have an alcohol assessment administered at Central Diagnostic & Referral Center (CDRS) within the next week, with a release of information being signed to the 55th District Court. A pre-trial conference will be set within two weeks of arraignment.
The assessment will be available at the pre-trial conference. If it shows that the defendant has a significant substance abuse problem, and if they are otherwise eligible, they will be offered the SOBRIETY Court program. If they accept, they will be immediately sentence to the SOBRIETY court program. Further information can be found in the operations manual, which is on our web site at: SOBRIETY COURT PROGRAM.
QUESTIONS: Any questions regarding the SOBRIETY Court program can be directed to: Beryl Frenger, Chief Probation Officer/Sobriety Court Coordinator, (517) 676-8424 or by email at: bfrenger@ingham.org
WAIVER OF ARRAIGNMENT: If it appears upon initial review that an individual may qualify for sobriety court treatment, then the court will not accept a waiver of arraignment, but rather will schedule arraignment to take place as quickly as possible.

S CAN BE OBTAINED AT: 405 N. CLIPPER ST. LANSING (NEAR RADNOR), $15 - MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF DATE OF BIRTH, ADDRESS & SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER. OPEN: MON-FRIDAY : 10:30AM -8PM (517-337-6060), OR AT LOCAL SOS BRANCHWorking in partnership with the Ingham County Sheriff's Office and the county's local police agencies, probation officers conduct unannounced and unscheduled home visits to those on probation, to ensure compliance with probation orders. These visits occur during all hours of the day and night, including weekends. Probation officers will always carry identification (including a badge) and be accompanied by a uniformed sheriff's deputy or police officer. Sheriff's deputies and police officers have the authority to arrest those on probation, if the deputy/officer finds there is probable cause to believe a probation violation has occurred.
As the result of convictions for drinking and driving, or driving while license suspended/revoked, the judge or district court magistrate may order the vehicle being driven, (even if owned by a third party) immobilized for a period of time. (MCL 257.904)
If your vehicle was ordered immobilized, you must contact an approved immobilization service and make arrangements to have the vehicle secured, so it cannot be driven during the period of immobilization.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE THE IMMOBILIZATION DEVICE PLACED ON THE VEHICLE, PAY THE APPROPRIATE FEE AND REPORT TO THE COURT THIS HAS OCCURRED, PRIOR TO THE DATE ON THE ORDER. Failure to comply with an immobilization order may result in a warrant for your arrest and/or an order of impound being issued. If an order of impound is issued, police officers will locate the vehicle and have the vehicle towed and then stored at an impound lot for the immobilization period. This is at the owners risk and expense.
If the immobilization order is from this court and you reside in Ingham, Eaton, Jackson, Shiawassee or Livingston counties, the approved immobilization service for this court is the Civil Division of the Ingham County Sheriff's Office. Contact Deputy Colin Carnegie at (517) 204-4244 or Deputy Trenton Taylor at (517) 204-4245. Driver-ID, Inc. is no longer in the business of vehicle immobilization. If you reside in a county not on the above list, contact your local District Court to determine who the approved service is in that county.
