Mortality Data: 

Capital Area Community Voices Mortality Query Tool.  Create your own data tables from death certificates.   Age adjusted and crude mortality rates by cause of death for Clinton, Eaton and Ingham Counties.  Compare subpopulations and track trends from 1994 to 1999.

New version is now available now at Mortality Data Query. Years of Potential Life Lost are also available. 
Capital Area Community Voices Mortality Data Mapper. Create maps of the distribution of deaths due to leading causes by Census Tract in Ingham County for 1994-1998. Age-adjusted and crude rates, as well as spot maps are available.   Compare subpopulations. Mortality Data Maps.  After you make a map you can get statistics for a Census Tract by clicking the "identify" button and clicking on a tract.  If you want data for all Tracts then click "Full Details". 
Michigan Department of Community Health.   Get access to detailed mortality tables for major causes of death.

Please be aware that Ingham County uses the Year 2000 Standard for age adjustment.  Michigan was using the 1940 Standard the last time we checked.  This means mortality rates computed using the Query Tool above will not be the same as those from the Department.

Maternal and Child Health:

Morbidity: Michigan Department of Community Health data on preventable hospitalizations are used as a measure of the effectiveness of the health care system.

Cancer Incidence.  Click "Cancer Statistics".  Scroll down the page to "Select Your Community for Cancer Trends". Select any item (such as "Stage at Diagnosis"), then click the word "County" at the top of the page to select your county.
Michigan Department of Community Health.   Data on Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

Other morbidity data, such as inpatient hospitalizations are controlled by the Michigan Hospital Association and are only available on a special request basis from the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases.  Click "Health Care Statistics".  Scroll down the page to "Select Your Community for Sexually Transmitted Diseases". Select any item (such as "Chlamydia"), then click the word "County" at the top of the page to select your county.
Health Behaviors: Centers for Disease Control.  A website with health behavior data from U.S. States and Territories.  Topics include tobacco use, diet, exercise, alcohol use, cancer screening, hypertension, cholesterol, obesity, and HIV/AIDS.  You can make tables, or charts.  To save a chart right-click on the image and then select "Save Image As...", or "Save Picture As...". Give it a name like mapname.gif and click "Save". Statewide Behavioral Risk Factor Survey Data.  Select the State, year and category of data you want (diabetes, tobacco use, fire arm safety, etc.).  A list of relevant questions will come back.  Select the question you want to see the answers to.   When the frequencies come back, you can ask to see the data grouped by gender, race, age, etc.
Capital Area Behavioral Risk Factor Survey.  Query data from the latest regional BRFS.   Topics include access to health care, health behaviors, health status, nutrition and the environment.  Capital Area Behavioral Risk Factor Survey.  Select a row and column variable to make a two way table.  For example select "Health Insurance" and "Not Able to See Doctor" to see that more than half (57.75)  of those without insurance had trouble seeing a doctor in 2000.
Youth Data: Youth Risk Behavior Survey.  Extensive data tables on the health behaviors of high school students in the U.S. including smoking, alcohol and marijuana use, sexual activity and condom use, injury prevention, and diet and exercise. Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Select the most recent year.  Go to the topic you are interested in and click on the link for a table.  Only national data are available. 
Institute for Survey Research at the University of Michigan.  Annual survey of high school students in the United States focussing on the use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and other substances.  Monitoring the Future Survey.   Click on data tables and figures.  Only national data are available.
Population and Income Data: Census Tiger Maps. 

How to make a map:   Scroll down to the bottom where it says "Search for a City" and enter "Lansing" and "MI".  Click "Search".  A list of possible places to map will come back.  Find the one you want and click "Browse Tiger Map".

 

Tiger Census Data Mapper.  To map Census statistics, scroll to where it says "Map Census Statistics".  Select Census Tracts or Block Groups for a level, and select the theme you want to map--Family Income, % Black, etc.  Click "Redraw Map".

To save a map you create, right-click on the image. You will get a menu with an option to "Save Image As...", or "Save Picture As...". Give it a name like mapname.gif and click "Save".

A quick way to get a map of a desired area is type in an address and then zoom out to level 4 or 6.  The 2000 Summary File 1 dataset has lots of interesting themes like race, ethnicity, household type, housing tenure and children.

American Fact Finder Thematic Map Servelet.  To get a map click 'Change Selections' and select 'Geography', then 'County', 'Michigan' then 'Your County Name'. Then  choose a dataset and theme--for example the percent of households with children. 
US Census Bureau.  2000 Census data is still being prepared for release, but many charts and tables are available now down to the city and county level, including counts and percents by age, race, ethnicity, household type, housing tenure, etc.  American Fact Finder Basic Facts Servelet. Select a table to make, then "county", "Michigan" and then the county you want data for.   
Michigan Department of Community Health.   Data on population by age, sex and race at the City and County levels. Population Estimates.   Select a table to make, and then click "city" or "county" at the top of the page and pick your community.
US Census Bureau Tract Profiler.  Find out what Census tract an address is in and then get a profile of that tract.  Make demographic comparisons between tracts.  Go to the Census Tract Street Locator and enter a street address. The application will tell you what tract the address is in and ask you if you want a demographic profile of the tract.  
Center for Geographic Information.   Demographic data, income and poverty statistics, population projections and geographic data. 

To get historic population figures click "Data", then "Demographic Data".

Demographic and Economic Data.  Select "Data" from the menu on the left, then select the kind of data you want (for example "Economic").  If you select economic data, you'll be able to get estimates of the percentage of people in poverty. 
Education: School District Data Books.  Michigan and National demographic data on school districts.  The Lansing State Journal includes information on test scores, funding, and free lunch participation. Michigan School District Data Book.

Environment: Ingham County Health Department Enviro-Data Mapper maps Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and other data.  Includes well test results for Ingham County. Environmental Protection Agency water quality data. This site hosts an aray of data extraction and mapping tools Surf Your Watershed.   A great tool for making maps of indicators of environmental quality.
Environmental Protection Agency air quality data.  Real time air data on ozone, carbon monozide, particulates, more.  Air Now.  Click on a location link for a map, or click on a topic for a forecast.   Click a film icon for an animated graph.    Ozone data not available in winter.
Maps: Center for Geographic Information.  A number of detailed maps in adobe acrobat format.   These maps print very nicely even if you enlarge them and print to a plotter.
