Gene L. Wriggelsworth, Sheriff
Jail Education Program
The in-house education of jail inmates takes place in the school wing. The jail education program began in the late 1960's, and is currently staffed with instructors and other personnel provided by the Lansing School Districts Office of Adult and Continuing Education. Since 75% of our inmates will be released to Lansing and the immediate area, the Lansing School District is the service provider. The people working in the school include four Lansing School District Employees and two Sheriffs Office personnel:
G.E.D. Instructor: Works with inmates testing a high school level to prepare for the high school equivalency examination.
Instructor: Works with inmates testing a eighth grade level and below to raise academic levels and eventually attain high school level skills.
Instructional Aide: Supervises the computer lab where inmates of all levels may access academic programs from a wide variety of software.
Instructional Aide: Supervises indoor inmate recreation in the gymnasium and outdoor recreation yard. Inputs enrollment and attendance data via computer to the Adult Education Center in Lansing.
Intake Coordinator: Fields all inmate school requests and refers inmates for enrollments. Publishes all school attendance lists for use by post officers in calling inmates out for classes. Administers G.E.D. examination to inmates who qualify via class work. Publishes weekly updated recreation lists. Transports G.E.D. tests weekly to Lansing School District. Refers inmates to Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Mt. Hope Ministries, New Way In of Lansing, Lansing Community College Seminar Program, and publishes all program lists for use by inmates.
Security Officer: Supervises movement of all inmates coming from residence areas to school wing daily. Maintains daily record of all inmate movement to wing. Provides security on wing while classes are in session.
In the calendar year 1997, 65 inmates passed the G.E.D. exam, on an all-time high since test administration began here in January of 1970.
