Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) poses a significant public health concern to the non-smoker, especially children. Non-smokers may be exposed to environmental tobacco smoke in the workplace, at home, and in public venues such as restaurants and bars. The Ingham County community continues to make progress toward protecting non-smokers from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer and increases the risk of heart disease in non-smoking adults. Additionally, exposure to secondhand smoke can cause asthma and increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, ear infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis in young children |
